Strategy made visible

The battle, beat by beat

This is the version told in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. A similar story appears in a third-century anecdote quoted by Pei Songzhi, who himself doubted it; Sima Yi was not on that front in 228.

Beat 1 of 6

Word of the approach

In the Romance, the outpost at Jieting has fallen and Zhuge Liang's troops are away. Scouts report Sima Yi approaching with a vast army. Only a few thousand soldiers and the civil officials remain in the town.

The lesson

A reputation for caution is itself a weapon. Displayed calmly, weakness reads as strength to an opponent who expects a trick.

The shot

“A lone figure on the gate tower, strings under his fingers, an entire army hesitating in the dust below.”

Logline. With nothing left to fight with, a strategist fights with his reputation.

What really happened

The script follows these beats. Where the novel or later legend embellishes, the reenactment says so.

  3. 03

    The guqin on the tower

In a Daoist robe and turban, Zhuge Liang climbs the gate tower with two boys, lights incense, and begins to play the guqin, smiling.

  4. 04

    Sima Yi halts

The vanguard stops and sends word back. Sima Yi rides forward himself and listens. The playing is unhurried, without a single wrong note.

  6. 06

    Withdrawal

Sima Yi orders the army to turn and withdraw. Zhuge Liang laughs and explains: they knew I am cautious, so they feared a trap. I had no choice but to gamble.
